Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2004 Marques de Arienzo Crianza
Rioja, Spain
$11-$13 Retail
Produced principally from estate grown grapes, this traditionally styled crianza represents both a high-quality wine and an excellent value. Made primarily from Tempranillo with tiny amounts of Graciano and Manzuelo, the wine is aged 18 months in American- and French-oak casks and another year in the bottle prior to release. Exceedingly well-structured and full-bodied, the wine exhibits both red and black fruit on the nose with earth, leather and vanilla notes. In the mouth, ripe dark cherries, currant and spice flavors with a touch of pepper and good acidity mingle with silky tannins, leading to a smooth finish. It's a fine accompaniment to a variety of dishes including meat, fish, paella, patés and mature cheeses. Where to buy it: Rouses Uptown, in Mid-City and at 2900 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie. Where to drink it: Schiro's Cafe and Bar, Mimi's in the Marigny.
