Cure

The new bar Cure (4905 Freret St., 302-2357; www.curenola.com) is focused on crafting high-end cocktails with old-fashioned technique and fresh ingredients. But the sleek, design-savvy establishment also serves a small menu of dishes from chef Jason McCullar. Plates of cheeses, meats or duck liver pate are ideal for sharing. Sandwich options include the vegetarian mushroom melt and cochon panino with spicy kimchee.

Philly's Cafe

Philadelphia-style cheesesteaks are the specialty at Philly's Café (2816 S. Claiborne Ave., 896-2228), which reopened in a different part of town after a long post-Katrina hiatus. The café serves inexpensive breakfast sandwiches, omelets and platters, but the flattop grills are put to their best use turning out 7- and 12-inch cheesesteaks topped with onions and peppers.
