2008 Rubizzo Sangiovese di Toscana

Tuscany, Italy / $10-$14 Retail

Tuscany's Sangiovese and Piedmont's Nebbiolo have become Italy's top varietals for red wine. In both inexpensive wines, more serious Brunello di Montalcinos and much sought-after Super Tuscans, Sangiovese grapes offer seductive aromatics, smooth tannins and food-friendly acidity. This medium-bodied wine is primarily Sangiovese blended with five percent Merlot. It offers intense bouquets of ripe, dark cherries, a leathery character, earthy notes and a pleasing minerality. Pair it with veal, pasta and pizza. Buy it at: Swirl Wines, W.I.N.O., Dorignac's and Acquistapace's Super Market. Drink it at: Bacco, K-Joe's Cajun and Creole Cuisine, W.I.N.O., Nuvolari's and Olive Garden. — Brenda Maitland
