Rumor has it that German tenor sax player Martin Krusche moved to New Orleans just two weeks after ending his first visit to the Crescent City in 1995. Although he keeps roots in New York City and has been active in the contemporary jazz scene in the Northeast, New Orleans has remained his primary playground since that fateful first taste of the city more than a decade ago. As a transplant, he's been a fabulous guest, playing gigs with local artists like trumpeter Nicholas Payton, the Iguanas' drummer Doug Garrison, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's sousaphone player Kirk Joseph and percussionist-about-town Anthony Cuccia. His contemporary jazz trio, the Magnetic Ear, features Bonerama sousaphonist Matt Perrine and drummer Kevin O'Day, and as all Krusche's sometime bandmates are known for individuality, the three put their own stamp on traditional New Orleans sounds.
