The bell tolls for David Vitter. It tolls for everyone at St. Francis Xavier Church in Old Metairie. It's a reverent sound, and the beginning of Mass. Wooden pews are filled, thin pages are flipped over and back, and whispers from the congregation become hushed. This is where Vitter, Louisiana's junior senator, feels at home.
His fellow parishioners can't help but stare or take quick glances. It's all just curious, like seeing the local weatherman grocery shopping or spotting Deuce McAllister in front of the line at Burger King. Observers take note when Vitter drapes an arm around his wife or stands to serve as the morning lector, just as he did on a regular basis before being linked in 2007 to Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the D.C. Madam.
Despite the shame of the sex scandal, he still shows his face. He clings to his old role in the parish. This, as much as anything Vitter does these days, is another exercise in Vitter's version of a mea culpa, the first leg of his transformation from political outcast to a Republican redeemed.
Louisiana has seen a performance like this before, albeit more personal and revealing the first time around. It's been about 20 years since Pentecostal preacher Jimmy Swaggart tearfully told his Baton Rouge congregation he was sorry for dallying with a prostitute. Swaggart's public confession and apology was delivered skillfully and with great public remorse, but without actually providing details of the transgression. "I have sinned against you," a tearful Swaggart said at the time.
When Vitter had to issue his own statement two years ago about his role in the D.C. Madam scandal, he took a strikingly different path. Rather than face the cameras and beg for forgiveness with tears in his eyes, as Swaggart did, Vitter issued a press release acknowledging "a very serious sin in my past." He didn't even go through his staff to send out the press release, but issued it himself late on a Monday night — when he realized the story was going to break the next day anyway. When he finally got caught on camera, Vitter apologized, didn't mention The Deed and got out of there. Fast. "This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said. No tears. No begging for forgiveness.
But Vitter, probably more so than anyone else, firmly believes Louisiana's voters are forgiving nonetheless — and, he hopes, easily distracted. Campaign commercials bankrolled by Democrats will not be kind. It's doubtful they've forgotten anything, from the D.C. Madam's committing suicide in the face of jail time to Vitter reportedly receiving phone calls from her escort service during roll call votes.
As for Vitter's strategy, it's all about diversionary tactics. He has to overshadow the obvious and rebrand himself.
In that regard, Vitter has taken a guerrilla-style approach to resurrecting his public image. Expect to see his name tattooed to any high-profile issues that move through the Senate. When the auto bailout vote raged last year, he described it as "ass-backwards" from the Senate floor and threatened to filibuster, grabbing national headlines in the process. During the confirmation hearings of Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton last week, Vitter stole the spotlight again with tough questions about conflicts of interest and ended up being the sole dissenter when Clinton was confirmed by a bipartisan 16-1 vote.
With regard to Christian conservatives, Vitter isn't just talking the talk and leaning on faith. He hopes to win them back with policy. Based on legislation he has in the hopper for this year, he's going to protect the American flag, end abortion, further public prayer, advance home schooling, curb illegal immigration, enforce the death penalty and get rid of drugs.
From within his own party, there are influential leaders pushing Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne to challenge Vitter in the GOP primary. On the Democratic side, Congressman Charlie Melancon is the clear frontrunner if he wants it, but it's becoming increasingly unlikely that he'll give up his House seniority. As of last week, he wasn't returning calls about 2010. Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco wants to recruit a Democrat, but there's a shortage of serious names floating to the top. Vitter scoffs at the notion of Blanco running herself, smugly telling WWL-TV that he would write a check to her campaign to get her to run.
Ultimately, Democrats will push one theme to the forefront: sex. Operatives have been hard at work trying to find an adult film star to qualify for the race. Hopes were initially high about landing Adult Video News award winner Stormy Daniels, a Baton Rouge-area native, but, like Melancon, her prospects are dwindling. Democrats may have to settle for a stripper or, um, other sex worker. But the project is in the pipeline. "It's going to happen," one operative says. "It's getting all wired up now."
The sideshow candidate will make it all the more difficult for Vitter to avoid questions about his infidelity. Or she could trivialize the affair and inadvertently help Vitter. Thus far, he has taken cues from his top supporter, Gov. Bobby Jindal. But, while Jindal's iron-curtain press office has managed to avoid major collisions, Vitter's driver once backed his car into a "No Parking" sign trying to help his boss avoid pesky reporters. For now, Jindal is giving Vitter much needed help in fundraising.
Many hope Vitter will never be redeemed. They may do well to remember that Vitter, the Lone Wolf of Louisiana Politics, doesn't seek literal redemption, just political indulgence in the form of another term in the U.S. Senate. For now, he is atoning for his "very serious sin" by simply staying in the game. Recent events suggest that, soon enough, he will go on the offensive. Whether voters choose to forgive him remains to be seen.

I can assure your readers that Senator David Vitter will be reminded of his transgressions for a very long time, maybe the rest of his life. The problem in Louisiana is the same one in Indiana: enough voter apathy that little men like Vitter slime into office, and the compounding factor of a state rife with irrational redneck voters who will swallow any lie that caters to their prejudices and fears. I'm currently writing my own account of what I witnessed (indirectly, mind you) in the whole Palfrey scandal. I was a sometime confidant and defense researcher for the deceased Ms. Palfrey, and came into a lot of materials in the case from various sources. I suggest that serious journalists probe the probable connection between Brent Wilkes, Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, Randy Cunningham, Shirlington Limo, and the cigar and poker parties held by Wilkes at the Westin and Watergate Hotels during the Bush II administration. Ms. Palfrey told me and several others that Mr. Wilkes employed the services of Pamela Martin & Associates on several occasions. Numerous lobbyists and GOP congressmen attended these "parties," and I would imagine that Senator Vitter did as well, at least a few times. All roads lead to San Diego...

PS: David's reputed to have had sex with Paula Neble. She was one of the government's "confidential informants," fancy that. I'm aware of all the names the government had--their list of former escorts. I should add that there is every possibility that the government's prosecutors (almost all of them appointed by Alberto Gonzales, Jeffrey Taylor being a curious interim appointee) knew that Palfrey was suicidal, as did some of her counsel. Why wasn't a competency hearing held? Ask Mr. Taylor. I'd also ask Preston Burton, he might be able to add more to this, although I doubt he's willing or even able to.

You state your case so well. Never mind that Senator Vitter utilized the services of brothels and escort services again and again--it's those damned Democrats. Never mind that Senator Vitter backed the Bush II administration tirelessly, embraced a profoundly flawed economic ideology, and lied again and again--it was those damned Democrats. If Louisianans want to keep soiling where they eat, that I guess, is the lot of the semi-literate, the redneck reactionary. How could anyone disagree with you? I assume you've been reading the comic books of Jack T. Chick lately...

Mr. Janovic seems to be more interested in making sure everyone believes he has all the facts of the case. I'm less interested in my Senator's personal life than in his or her political life and policy positions. At this time I choose to support Senator Vitter. This country needs a loyal opposition to the Democrat controlled Congress and White House and (God help us) Supreme Court. I applaud Vitter's stand against the obvious socialism which threatens to overtake this country if the President with Nancy and Harry have their way. Do we really want to fix this economy? If so look at the actions of JFK and Ronald Reagan. Both cut taxes and both actions resulted in an improved economy. In Reagan's case he cut income taxes from a high of over 70% to 28% and 20 million jobs were created in 7 years. Obama's plan will raise taxes on productive business and individuals and create or expand social programs and he hopes to create or save 2 or 3 or 4 million jobs. The number changes often. So I say keep Vitter. We need to defeat the socialist policies if possible and if not we must be ready to take over the Congress and White house.

CigarSmoker, the reason that Vitter is so despicable is that he uses his own family in his commercials to advertise his so-called family values. His backers are religious nutcases whose determination to tell everyone what they do in the privacy of their own bedrooms is the business of the state. These are the threats to people's liberties. Not the baillout, which is NOT socialism of any kind. Instead it's an attempt to rescue capitalism from its own desperate excesses, which has led to rich Republicans ripping off the rest of the country. You can't seriously suggest that tearing up the rule book for business, while trying outlaw things like abortion and homosexuality is a philosphically coherent position. Ditto the failed war on drugs. And yet pricks like Vitter do just that. And he doesn't even live up to his own BS. I find it astounding that Palfrey faced prison before her tragic suicide while customers like Vitter walk off free. Where's the justice or ethics in that? He's a total slug.

OMG I do not fault David Vitter for sinning. I do not fault David Vitter for going before all mankind and admitting his sin and asking God, his Wife and the citizens to forgive him. What I do fault him for is going about the nation, upholding Unconstitutional Sex Offender laws which harm everyone in the nation with the exception if HIM and HIS Family. Hypocrite! Hypocrite! Hypocrite... and, Why is Piyush Jindal Ashamed of his heritage. Is he ashamed that he is an Indian? What's up with that. Come look at the photo of David Vitter, Standing next to Piyush Jindal as he speaks about punishing those Monsters, those Nasty Sex Offenders.... They always say, it is not who you know, but who you _low! Question... Remember Mark Foley... that guy who was sexing up all those little boys in the Congressional Page program.. the one who went all over the nation wanting to Punish Sex Offenders... Contrast his politicking with that of Piyush Jindal's... Everywhere you go, all you hear about from Jindal is SEX, SEX, SEX OFFENDER... What's up with that... 120 thousand, 120,000 PEOPLE OUT OF WORK IN LOUISIANA. Business closing in droves... people losing their homes... and all Jindal can think about is Sex, Sex, Sex... maybe it is rubbing off of Vitter..... Come see videos and photos, Jindal and Vitter... http://www.cfcamerica.org

If you want to talk about policy? How many hear believe in the Constitution? How many here believe in the Oath of Office? Ok, Read on... Every Elected Official takes an Oath of Office. This is the Oath of Office both David Vitter and Piyush Jindal Took: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the constitution and laws of the United States and the constitution and laws of this state and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent on me according to the best of my ability and understanding, so help me God. Piyush Jindal took that oath when he became Governor of Louisiana. David Vitter took that oath when he became U.S. Senator. When will he change these laws to help the children of Louisiana? The Louisiana Constitution says plainly: Article 1, Section 23. Prohibited Laws No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts shall be enacted. Right now in the state of Louisiana, these two, Vitter and Jindal, are enforcing Ex Post Facto Sex Offender laws which are harming thousands of Ex Sex Offenders... men who might have committed 1 crime 20, 30 years ago, way before any of the Sex Offender Registration laws were even thought of. But they are applying these new laws to men who have served all their time. These men are no threat to society as if they were, they would have been arrested again for a new crime! The children of Ex Offenders who are now unconstituionally made Sex Offenders and put on the Registry suffer the most. They lose all their friends, they cannot go to sports, they cannot go to parks... their lives are made living hell. Prison without walls. Everyone wants to be protected form those who would harm children, men or women. Laws should protect all citizens equally. The rich, the poor, the girl at the drive through window at McDonalds and the Children of the President... why should any one group of people enjoy more protection. Equal protection under the law. Thes slimy politicians dangle some FEAR in front of the Sheeple of America to manipulate them into going along with their Hitler style lawmaking.. and everyone falls for it... these laws are unconstitutional and harming thousands of innocent children. Our government and our Governor have been standing by and allowing the good citizens of the United States of America to be harmed beyond repair by allowing to stand a nationally enacted a law which clearly is in direct violation of the Constitution of the United States as well as the constitutions of each and every state individually. How can Americans, Legislators, Judges, State Representatives sit idly by and allow Good Americans to again be punished for a crime that they might have committed 30 years ago, and have already served their time for? If these lawmakers can pass laws which are clearly unconstitutional, and punish persons twice for 1 crime, who will be next? What part of the constitution will they throw out next? And what about the oath of office, that oath that they take that states they will SUPPORT THE CONSTITUTION???
